Background

Tigurian Atlantic was established by Hannes Frey in 2012 to provide guidance and research for institutions, corporations and wealthy families who are active in the transatlantic space.

The approach is rooted in a life-long engagement with law, business, history and culture. Hannes has studied law at the University of Zurich (lic. iur., 1982), business at Harvard University (MBA, 1985) and, more recently, history and culture at the University of Oxford (Master of Studies in Literature and Arts, 2016; Master of Studies in Historical Studies, 2021).

He is presently conducting historical research at the University of Oxford to explore how literary and cultural frameworks shaped the practice of British diplomacy and the development of the British Empire in the decades after the Congress of Vienna.

From 1986 to 2000, he practiced investment banking at UBS in New York and later became Chief of Staff for the Americas. In this role, he headed the U.S. integration office for the merger of UBS and Swiss Bank Corporation, including SBC Warburg Dillon Read. Completed in 1998, this was one of the world’s largest transactions at the time. The project became a crystallization point for the development of the strategic guidance model.

Throughout the 1990s, Hannes also served as Chairman of the Swiss Institute of New York, a leading Swiss cultural institution in the United States.

From 2001 to 2003 he was Head of Corporate Affairs at Novartis where he guided the worldwide management of strategic issues, developed political risk management, and implemented the company’s highly regarded corporate citizenship policy.

From 2004 to 2011, he managed the March Group, a privately held, international investment concern based in Bermuda with a multi-billion dollar portfolio and strategic interests in the global pharmaceutical and financial services sectors.

In 2012, he set up Tigurian Atlantic to make his approach available to a small circle of clients.
